Hi, everyone. Many of us are currently traveling to be with friends and family this week, and I wish everyone a restful and meaningful holiday. Safe travels!
Things are moving along nicely at Athena as we prepare for our big launch in Fall 2026. Athena Micro-academy will be located in the Austin area and I am still working on establishing a location. I am hoping it will be closer to our home in the South Austin area, but I am open to the opportunities the universe provides. I am also tackling the marketing side of things and am utilizing social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to help me get the word out. I am fortunate to have the support of my network of friends and family who are providing feedback and moral support, which is priceless. Asking for help is outside of my comfort zone, but I remind myself that there are students out there who are eager to find alternative options to their education experience and that keeps me moving forward. Our students deserve better. I am also currently working on a small field research project. I am a KaiPod Catalyst Program member and one of our tasks is to ask parents I cross paths with at the coffee shops or bookstores (in an un-weird manner) what they are seeking in their child’s learning and education journey. What are families not currently seeing in their traditional schools that they wish alternative programs offered? I look forward to hearing what my interviewees say, and I anticipate at least one parent will say they are seeking a learning experience for their child where they can develop meaningful relationships with their peers and learning coaches. One of the powerful benefits that a microschool provides is cool enrichment programs. I am excited about Athena's life and leadership skills program, aka Athena's Council, where students learn to be more effective communicators. One form of communication that is sometimes forgotten is being a good listener, and within that there is listening to understand and listening to respond. But that's for another day! My goal is to offer students a rich program that includes engaging learning experiences that will carry students far in life regardless if they decide to attend college or jumpstart their career immediately after high school. Here is an article called "5 Listening Skills That Will Improve All of Your Relationships" by Jennifer González, one of my favorite education bloggers. My favorite listening skill is eye contact! It's simple, although not always easy for everyone. Enjoy the read. Until next time! The recent NAEP report card provides us further proof that there is room for improvement in our current education system. In a PBS article, Thomas Kane, professor of education at Harvard's Graduate School of Education, was not surprised by the results. He offers three hypotheses to explain the trends we are observing:
Regarding test accountability, Athena aims to use the MAP Growth assessments to help us understand where the student is at the beginning of their Athena journey and to observe growth throughout each year. Schools and educators use computer-adaptive MAP Growth assessments to inform their most impactful decisions about student learning. The increase in social media use is a concern for many families and many schools across the country have banned cell phones this year. I am not certain this will solve the issue, but I understand the widespread concern and I appreciate that something is being tried. In a microschool environment, it is much easier to set cell phone expectations and parameters that are reasonable and respect the dignity of each student. Instead of removing this tool from students, it’s invaluable to teach them about modern issues and concerns, such as the pros and cons of social media and A.I. use and academic integrity so that they are able to make informed decisions. On the topic of school absenteeism, I argue that a micro-sized learning environment that is welcoming, warm, and where students are able to exercise a sense of independence and flexibility, increases the desire to want to be at school. Because microschools are small by design, every student experiences high engagement each day, further inspiring their attendance. Small class or pod sizes allow students to feel they are a part of something unique, where their peers rely on their attendance and contributions. Families are hungry for something different. They seek a high-quality, personalized program that emphasizes individuality over efficiency, high engagement versus getting lost in the crowds, flexible curriculum options versus a common state-wide curriculum that may not meet the needs of each learner. KaiPod Learning shares that microschools offer a powerful alternative because they meet students where they are, not where the system expects them to be, and I agree. Greetings, everyone! It’s a new school year and students are back in the classrooms and learning spaces. Congratulations!
A new school year brings excitement for new beginnings as well as mental planning and preparation for what may come next. As families are settling into their new routines, some are experiencing contentment with where they are while others may be noticing that a traditional school environment is no longer the best fit for their child. If traditional school is no longer engaging your child and you are seeking a smaller, more personalized alternative, you are at the right place! Athena Micro-academy might be what you are seeking. Maybe your child is overwhelmed with social aspects and pressures of larger, traditional schools. Maybe your child is an advanced, independent learner who still wishes to socialize with peers in a small - microsmall - school environment. Perhaps you are looking for a learning environment where your child will engage in learning experiences every single day. What is a microschool and how is it different from homeschool? Here is a Kaipod Learning article that offers clarity between microschooling and homeschooling. Greetings, Visitor!
For the last few weeks, I have been diving deeply into curating a strong curriculum library for my future families and students. I am seeking options that offer self-paced and asynchronous programs with some built-in program-specific support. I am also seeking options that do not follow an August-May calendar year and that are a better fit for Athena's year-round program. Learning is continuous. It never stops. It also does not align with an antiquated agrarian society calendar where children were needed for farm labor during the summer months. Long summer breaks not only disrupt the momentum of learning but they also box families into a pre-determined schedule that does not fit everyone's needs or goals. Teachers know the "summer slide" very well. After a long, summer break, effective teachers understand that before they introduce any new material, they must first spend several weeks reviewing material from the previous school year. This "review time" could be used for new learning or deeper dives into various topics. Long summer breaks from school also widen gaps for students who cannot access summer enrichment programs. Lastly, the traditional calendar also creates an intense, unrelenting 10-month work period for teachers, followed by a summer where many obtain second jobs to make ends meet. This may lead to teacher burnout. Instead, year-long programs with built-in intercessions allow for continuous learning, a momentum of growth, and immediate and targeted interventions when needed. Teachers can develop a more steady and less disrupted learning flow with breaks for everyone along the way. Additionally, families who wish to travel more understand that travel rates are always more expensive during the "peak" seasons, including during June and July. A year-long program allows for families who wish to travel to do so with more flexibility during the multiple intercessions that take place throughout the year. Hello, visitor! First, allow me to introduce to you Glaux, our wise owl mascot and faithful companion.
Thank you for visiting Athena Micro-academy of Austin! We are 12 months from launching and are working diligently behind the scenes to gear up for Day 1. We are thrilled about the prospect of offering families a different way of doing school. Stay tuned for updates here and on our social media pages. |
